Lawn Care 101
Dog Spot

Pets and Grass Types

Q. I would like to build a dog run that contains some grass for the dogs to play on. Is Find Your Local 1-800-LAWNCARE Providerthere a grass type that would be tolerant to pet urine?

A.There are really no grass types that tolerate pet uring better than others. Grasses in the pet run will also be subject to a lot of wear and tear. One option is Kentucky Blue Grass / perennial ryegrass mixture. Another option is tall fescue. In either case, occasional overseeding will be needed to help keep a reasonably thick turf. Tall fescue would tolerate heat and drought better than Kentucky Blue Grass, but will not fill in when thinned unless it's overseeded.

Q. What can be done about a dog's urine causing brown or yellow spots?

A. Adding water immediately after the dog has been on the lawn can help to reduce the chance of yellowing by diluting the urine and washing it off of the grass blades.
